FAQs:

What if I want to do a portrait with more than 3 subjects? No problem! Each additional subject simply carries a $15 surcharge.

What if I need to combine subjects from multiple reference photos into a single portrait? A composite portrait includes an added fee of $50 for each additional reference photo used to cover editing and color correction to ensure a uniform look to the piece.

What makes a good reference photo? I copy directly from the reference photo so the best results are when the photo itself is as close as possible to the how you want the end product to look. For example, if you want to focus on the face, a photo that shows the face very clearly and in-focus is ideal (usually from the torso up is best in this case). If you want a full body portrait, the photo should show the full body from head to toe, but keep in mind that the face will be less of a focal point because it will be quite small. Also keep in mind the surroundings — for example, if you only want a full body portrait of one subject, but the reference photo is of them with their arms around the shoulders of another person, the subject would be painted missing the arm that disappears behind their friend.

Can you share some tips for if I’m taking an original reference photo?

  1. Go outside on a sunny day. Position the subject so that the sun is not directly behind you, but so that it is off to one side but still behind you, so that the subject’s face is mostly well lit. Picture your setting as a clock, the subject is at 12 and you're at 6. The sun should be somewhere around 4 or 8. You can get away with a day that's overcast but bright, but still be aware of where the sun is, because most of the light will come from that direction.

  2. Height - Your camera should be at about the same level as the subject’s face, or just a little higher.

  3. Get about six to eight feet from the subject, then use the zoom on your camera to zoom in closer on their face. This prevents distortion of features.

  4. Shoot a bunch of shots. Have the subject look at you, then look away. Shoot at minimum 30 photos, more if possible. When you're done, send me the four or five you like best.
